Oh how glorious it is! Three days of rest and relaxation. For our
part, we decided to meet the inlaws halfway and camp at Lake Maloney.
It’s about 5 miles south of North Platte, NE. To add to our enjoyment,
some old family friends with kids the same ages as ours would be joining
us, with their parents and some old friends. All said and done, we
took up 3 trailers and two tents.
Our weekend began with an ominous start. About 5 miles out of
Grand Island, we blew our right rear tire. I was able to get the donut
out, but we could not safely pull far enough onto the pavement to make
our scissor jack effective. Luckily, the NE State Patrol has a
volunteer service called motorist assist. After a quick call, a
gentleman pulled up with a hydraulic jack and a battery operated impact
drill. Made changing the tire easy. During the process, the gentleman
asked where we were from. We told him, and it turns out, here grew up
outside of our tiny village. I looked at his name badge, and sure
enough, it was one of the larger families in town. Turns out, he is the
great uncle of one of my Cub Scouts! So thanks for the help, Uncle
Larry!
We stopped for lunch in Kearney, and ended up getting into camp
very late. So Boppa (that’s what my kids call my father in law) helped
me get the tent set up. We spent a few minutes catching up and went
straight to bed. For those who are worried, the baby slept in the
trailer with Mommy. It was just us Big Boys in the tent.
We got back tonight and I am very tired, so I will fill in the rest
of the story tomorrow, with pics. It is filled with adventure, danger,
excitement, and a new fishing pole for a 4 year old. Stay tuned….
